If you had asked that question last week I would have said yes if you were starting a blog to promote an affiliate product and maybe if you were starting a blog for your local business. Today if you want to start a blog and buy a domain name I’d have to get you to watch this video before you decide because I am wondering if this is advanced warning from Google that something is about to change.
“….We have looked at the rankings and the weights that we give to keyword domains and some people have complained that we are giving too much weight for keywords and domains and so we have been thinking about adjusting the mix a little bit and turning the knob down in the algorthim so that given two different domains it wouldn’t necessarily help you as much to have a domain with a bunch of keywords in it” Matt Cutts, Google
Google are so great at keeping everyone on their toes. You can never become complacent and think you know it all because no sooner do you think you have found something that works in terms of getting ranked/SEO and they decide to change the goal posts.
This is one of the reasons why people new to the world of blogging who are searching for information on how to make money with a blog get so confused. They watch videos that promote one thing, then find out that is out of date and they should do something else, and usually end up frustrated and doing nothing. More evidence that you really can’t rely on free information on the web and that being part of a blogging community can help you avoid these pitfalls.
